Weeks 15 to 18: When You Might Find Out Boy or Girl
Weeks 15 to 18 are when many parents find out boy or girl by ultrasound. Learn what affects the view and how to make your gender reveal scan special.

Our ultrasounds are elective, non-diagnostic, and performed solely for keepsake and peace of mind purposes. They are not a substitute for a medical ultrasound from your healthcare provider.
The early second trimester is when the big question finally has a chance of an answer. From about 15 weeks, a gender reveal ultrasound can often show whether you are expecting a boy or a girl, as long as your baby is willing to cooperate.
In this article we cover what is happening with you and your baby between weeks 15 and 18, what affects the view, and how families turn the moment into a celebration. It is part of our pregnancy week by week guide.
Your Baby at 15 to 18 Weeks
Your baby is growing steadily and becoming more coordinated. Arms and legs move freely, and on screen you may see stretching, kicking or hands near the face. The baby's features and body are becoming more defined, which is why a short 3D peek is sometimes possible in this window if the position is good.
The baby's hearing is also beginning to develop during the second trimester. In the weeks ahead, many babies start to respond to sounds, something we explore in weeks 23 to 26: your baby can hear your voice.
How You May Be Feeling
Many moms describe the second trimester as the most comfortable stage. Energy may return, nausea often fades and a small bump may appear. Some women start to notice the very first flutters of movement toward the end of this window, especially in a second or later pregnancy, while first-time moms often notice them a little later.
Every pregnancy is unique. If you have concerns about symptoms, discomfort or anything that feels unusual, your OB or midwife should be your first call.
When Gender Can Be Seen on Ultrasound
By around 15 weeks, the baby's anatomy is often developed enough to see gender on ultrasound. That is why our Gender Reveal package starts at 15 weeks and runs through 22 weeks. Even within this window, what we can see depends on how the baby is lying, whether the legs are crossed and how active the baby is that day.
We never promise a result we cannot see. If the baby is hiding, our technician may suggest a short walk, a change of position or a little snack to encourage movement. Our goal is always an honest, clear answer.
- Baby's position: legs crossed or facing the back can make the view harder.
- Timing: being comfortably inside the 15 to 22 week window helps.
- Movement: a gentle walk before the scan can encourage the baby to shift.

What Happens During a Gender Reveal Session
Our Gender Reveal session lasts up to 15 minutes in 2D/3D. It includes gender determination or confirmation, the chance to hear the heartbeat, printed pictures, a sneak peek in 3D if the baby is in a good position, digital pictures and the full video, plus the baby's growth, weeks, due date and weight.
Many families bring loved ones along; we have seating for up to 8 guests. Some parents want to hear the answer right away, while others ask us to keep it a secret for a party. Just let us know before we begin.
Want to Know Even Sooner?
If you simply cannot wait until 15 weeks, our SneakPeek Gender DNA Test is available from 8 weeks. It is a blood test, not an ultrasound, and many parents later confirm the result on screen. Our article with answers to common questions about early gender DNA tests explains how it works.
Either way, remember that your medical anatomy scan, usually scheduled around 18 to 22 weeks, is an important part of your prenatal care. Learn more about that stage in weeks 19 to 22, halfway there and the first kicks.
Sharing the News With Your Family
Finding out boy or girl often sparks a wave of plans: names, nursery colors and how to tell everyone. Some parents share the result with loved ones in the studio, while others save it for a party with cake, balloons or a box that opens to reveal the color.
However you celebrate, keep it simple and true to your family. The joy comes from the moment together, not from how elaborate it is. If older siblings are part of the reveal, a small role like popping a balloon or opening a card can help them feel included in the new baby's story from the start.
The Right Package for Weeks 15 to 18
Our Gender Reveal package ($79, 15 to 22 weeks, 2D/3D) is made for exactly this moment. It is a joyful, relaxed visit where your family can share the news together.
When you are ready, you can book your Gender Reveal scan at our Charlotte studio. There is no deposit, and we only ask for at least 24 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule.

Frequently asked questions
Is 15 weeks too early for a gender scan?
Fifteen weeks is the start of our Gender Reveal window. Gender can often be seen then, though the baby's position always plays a part.
What if the baby will not show us?
Our technician may suggest a short walk or a change of position to encourage movement. We only share an answer we can clearly see.
Can you keep the gender a secret for my party?
Yes. Tell us before the scan starts and we will keep the result off the screen and give it to you privately.
Does the Gender Reveal include a 3D view?
It includes a sneak peek in 3D when the baby is in a good position. At this stage the 3D view is a short preview rather than detailed face images.
