Your Pregnancy Week by Week: From First Heartbeat to Birth
A warm, stage-by-stage guide to your pregnancy week by week, from the first heartbeat to birth, and which elective ultrasound fits each stage best.

Our ultrasounds are elective, non-diagnostic, and performed solely for keepsake and peace of mind purposes. They are not a substitute for a medical ultrasound from your healthcare provider.
Following your pregnancy week by week is one of the sweetest ways to feel connected to your baby long before you meet. Every stage brings something new: a first flicker of a heartbeat, a profile you can finally recognize, little kicks that wake you at night, and a face that starts to look like family.
At Video Prenatal we have welcomed families to our Charlotte studio since 2007, and one question comes up again and again: "What is happening right now, and when is the best time to see my baby?" This guide walks through each stage in plain language, links to a deeper article for every window of weeks, and explains which elective ultrasound fits each moment. For anything medical, your OB or midwife is always your first and best source.
How Pregnancy Weeks Are Counted
Pregnancy is usually counted from the first day of your last menstrual period, not from the day of conception. That is why, at the moment you see a positive test, you may already be considered four or five weeks pregnant. A full-term pregnancy is typically described as about 40 weeks, divided into three trimesters.
Your provider may adjust your due date after an early medical ultrasound, because measurements of the baby can give a more precise picture than dates alone. If your weeks change, do not worry. It simply means your care team has more information. When you book an elective scan with us, we ask for your current weeks so we can recommend the package that matches your stage.
- First trimester: roughly weeks 1 to 13, when the baby's basic structures form.
- Second trimester: roughly weeks 14 to 27, often called the most comfortable stretch, with first movements and a big growth spurt.
- Third trimester: roughly week 28 to birth, when the baby gains weight, fills out and gets ready for the outside world.
First Trimester: Heartbeat, Tiny Beginnings and Your First Scan
The first weeks are a time of rapid, invisible change. Many parents feel a mix of joy, nerves and tiredness all at once. Early symptoms such as nausea, fatigue and tender breasts are common, though every pregnancy is different, and some moms feel very little at all.
Around weeks 6 to 10, a medical or elective ultrasound can often show the heartbeat as a small, steady flicker. For many families, hearing or seeing it for the first time is the moment the pregnancy suddenly feels real. We cover what to expect in this window, including why timing matters, in Weeks 6 to 10: your baby's first heartbeat and early growth.
As the first trimester closes, the baby begins to look more like a tiny person, with a rounder head and little arms and legs that move even though you cannot feel them yet. Many moms find that early nausea starts to ease around this time. Our article on weeks 11 to 14 and closing out the first trimester explains this transition and the early screening conversations your provider may bring up.
In the first trimester, the goal of an elective scan is reassurance and a first keepsake. Our First Peek (also called Peace of Mind) package is $59 and available from 7 to 40 weeks. It is a 2D session of up to 10 minutes where you can hear or see the heartbeat, take home printed pictures, and see the baby's growth, weeks and due date.
Some parents are also curious about gender very early. Our SneakPeek Gender DNA Test ($150, from 8 weeks, cash only) is an early gender DNA blood test, not an ultrasound. It takes about 15 minutes at the studio. You can read more about how it works in our article answering common questions about early gender DNA tests.
Second Trimester: Boy or Girl, First Kicks and a Baby Who Hears You
The second trimester often brings a welcome burst of energy. The bump may start to show, and appetite may return. This is also the stage when many families start planning how to find out, and share, whether they are expecting a boy or a girl.
From about 15 weeks, gender can often be seen on ultrasound, as long as the baby is in a cooperative position. That is why our Gender Reveal package starts at 15 weeks and runs through 22 weeks. We explain the timing, what affects the view and how families make the moment special in weeks 15 to 18: when you might find out boy or girl.
Many families pair a gender scan with a small celebration. Some invite grandparents to the studio, others ask us to seal the answer in an envelope for a party later that week. If you are dreaming up ideas, our articles on preparing for baby include tips for planning a gender reveal your family will remember.
Around 20 weeks you reach the halfway point. This is often when your provider schedules the medical anatomy scan, typically between 18 and 22 weeks, to check the baby's development in detail. Your provider will explain what the exam looks at and share the results with you. That exam is part of your prenatal care, and an elective keepsake scan never replaces it.
Many first-time moms begin to notice movement in this window. At first it can feel like bubbles, flutters or a gentle tap, and it becomes stronger over the following weeks. Our article on weeks 19 to 22, halfway there and the first kicks covers what those first movements feel like and why there is a wide range of normal.
The halfway point is also a natural crossover between packages. Through 22 weeks, the Gender Reveal session (up to 15 minutes in 2D/3D) can determine or confirm gender, let you hear the heartbeat and send you home with printed pictures, digital pictures and the full video. From 22 weeks, the 5D Sneak Peek offers a first detailed look at the face with four color 4x6 pictures and digital pictures.
Between roughly weeks 23 and 26, your baby's hearing is developing, and many babies begin to respond to sounds from outside the womb. Your voice, your partner's voice and even a big sibling singing can become familiar sounds. Many parents love to read, talk or play music to the bump during this stage.
This is also a lovely time for a first look in 5D, because the baby's features are becoming more defined while there is still room to move. Read more in weeks 23 to 26: your baby can hear your voice, including ideas for bonding with your baby every day.

Third Trimester: The Sweet Spot for 3D/4D and 5D HD
For detailed face images, many families find that the window between about 27 and 32 weeks is ideal. By then, the baby has more fat under the skin, which gives the cheeks and lips that soft, round look, while there is usually still enough fluid in front of the face for clear images.
Our Golden Memories ($129, 27 weeks and up) and Mommy Bundle ($169, 27 weeks and up) packages are designed for this stage, using our GE Voluson E10 with HDlive Silhouette. We explain why this window is so popular in weeks 27 to 32: the best time for a 3D/4D ultrasound. If you want the full picture of how these technologies compare, see the complete guide to 3D, 4D and 5D HD ultrasound.
The Final Stretch: Getting Ready to Meet Your Baby
From about 33 weeks to birth, your baby focuses on gaining weight and maturing, especially the lungs and brain. Space gets tighter, so movements may feel more like rolls and stretches than sharp kicks. Your provider will likely see you more often and talk with you about signs of labor, the baby's position and your birth plan.
Many parents find the third trimester emotional in a new way. The due date suddenly feels close, and practical questions about feeding, sleep and support at home start to take up more space. Leaning on your partner, family and friends, and asking your provider about classes or resources in your area, can make this stage feel calmer.
This is a time for rest, nesting and final preparations, from the hospital bag to car seat checks. An elective scan is still possible in these weeks, though the baby may be snuggled low with less room to turn. Our article on weeks 33 to 40, the final stretch before you meet your baby shares what to expect and how to keep expectations realistic for late-pregnancy images.
A Quick Guide: Matching Each Stage to a Package
Every baby is different, and image quality can never be guaranteed, but choosing a package that fits your weeks gives you the best chance of the experience you are hoping for. Some families visit once, others come back at two or three stages to watch their baby change. Here is a simple way to think about it:
- 7 weeks and up: First Peek / Peace of Mind ($59, 2D) for the heartbeat, printed pictures, growth, weeks and due date.
- 8 weeks and up: SneakPeek Gender DNA Test ($150, cash only) for an early gender answer by blood test.
- 15 to 22 weeks: Gender Reveal ($79, 2D/3D) to find out or confirm boy or girl.
- 22 weeks and up: 5D Sneak Peek ($99, 5D) for a first detailed look at the face.
- 27 weeks and up: Golden Memories ($129, 5D/HD, 30 minutes) or Mommy Bundle ($169, 5D/HD live, with an 8K hyperrealistic image and a Heartbeat Bear).
Your Care Team First, Then Your Visit to Our Charlotte Studio
Elective ultrasounds are about bonding, memories and peace of mind. They are not diagnostic and never take the place of the medical ultrasounds and checkups your OB or midwife schedules. If anything feels off, such as pain, bleeding, fluid leaking or a change in the baby's movements later in pregnancy, contact your healthcare provider right away rather than waiting for an elective visit.
Keep a short list of questions for each prenatal appointment. Writing things down as they come up during the week makes it easier to remember them in the exam room, and it helps you feel more confident and informed as your pregnancy moves forward.
When you are ready, you can book your elective ultrasound online or compare everything on our package overview. We are open Monday thru Saturday by appointment only, and for same-day appointments you can call or WhatsApp us to confirm availability. Family and friends are welcome, with seating for up to 8 guests, and hablamos Español.
There is no deposit to book. If your plans change, please give us at least 24 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule. Late cancellations or missed appointments may require a deposit for future bookings. After your visit, your images and videos are easy to access through the Bomee app, so you can share them with the people you love. Wherever you are in your pregnancy week by week, we would be honored to be part of the journey.
