Weeks 19 to 22: Halfway There and the First Kicks
At weeks 19 to 22 you reach the halfway point, many moms feel the first kicks, and your provider schedules the anatomy scan. Here is what to expect now.

Our ultrasounds are elective, non-diagnostic, and performed solely for keepsake and peace of mind purposes. They are not a substitute for a medical ultrasound from your healthcare provider.
Congratulations, you are halfway there. Weeks 19 to 22 are full of meaningful moments: many moms feel their first baby kicks, the bump becomes more visible, and your provider usually schedules the detailed anatomy scan.
In this article we explain what is generally happening in this stage and how elective scans fit in. For a view of the whole journey, see our pregnancy week by week guide.
Your Baby at the Halfway Point
Your baby is busy growing, moving and practicing. Muscles are getting stronger, and movements become more purposeful. On ultrasound, you may see the baby stretching, turning or bringing a hand toward the face.
The baby's senses keep developing through the second trimester, and hearing in particular is getting ready to pick up sounds from your world. In the next few weeks, many babies begin to respond to voices and music, which we describe in weeks 23 to 26: your baby can hear your voice.
What First Kicks Feel Like
Many first-time moms notice first movements somewhere around 18 to 22 weeks, and moms in a second or later pregnancy may notice them a bit sooner. At first, they rarely feel like kicks. Parents describe them as bubbles, flutters, a light tap or even a tiny fish swimming.
Over the following weeks, those flutters become stronger and easier to recognize. Partners can often feel them from the outside a little later. If you are unsure whether you have felt movement yet, that is very common. Your OB or midwife can talk with you about what to expect and when to pay closer attention to movement patterns.
- Try lying quietly on your side after a meal; many moms notice movement when they are still.
- Place a hand on your belly and relax; flutters are easy to miss when you are busy.
- Share the moment: invite your partner or kids to feel once movements get stronger.
The Medical Anatomy Scan
A medical anatomy scan is typically done around 18 to 22 weeks. It is a detailed exam ordered by your provider to look at the baby's development, and it is an essential part of prenatal care. An elective keepsake scan never replaces it.
Some families enjoy both: the medical scan for health, and an elective visit to relax, bring the family and take home keepsakes. If you are unsure how the two differ, our article on elective vs medical ultrasound clears up the most common confusion.
Gender Reveal Before 22 Weeks, 5D From 22 Weeks
This stage sits right at a helpful crossover. Our Gender Reveal package covers 15 to 22 weeks, so if you have not found out yet, there is still time. From 22 weeks, the 5D Sneak Peek becomes available for a first detailed look at your baby's features.
If gender is your main goal, our article on weeks 15 to 18 and finding out boy or girl explains what affects the view. If you are more excited about seeing a face, you may want to wait a little longer; the most detailed images usually come later in pregnancy.
How You May Be Feeling
Many moms feel well at this stage, with good energy and a growing bump. Some notice round ligament discomfort, back aches or changes in sleep as the belly grows. Comfortable shoes, supportive pillows and regular rest can make a real difference.
Any pain, bleeding or symptom that worries you deserves a call to your healthcare provider. Elective scans are wonderful for bonding, but your care team is there for your health and your baby's health.
Small Comforts for the Middle of Pregnancy
The middle of pregnancy is a good time to build habits that will help later. Many moms find that side sleeping with a pillow between the knees, short walks and regular breaks from sitting make the days feel easier. Your provider can tell you which activities are best for you.
It is also a practical window to start thinking about the months ahead: touring the hospital or birth center, looking into classes and sketching out a simple registry. Doing a little at a time keeps it from feeling overwhelming later in pregnancy. A short weekly list of two or three tasks is often enough to stay on track.
