The final weeks of pregnancy are a mix of excitement, impatience and last-minute nesting. Between weeks 33 and 40, your baby is getting ready for birth, and so are you.

In this article we cover what is generally happening, how to prepare, and what to expect if you are thinking about a late elective scan. It completes our pregnancy week by week guide, from first heartbeat to birth.

How Your Baby Is Getting Ready

In these weeks, the baby's main job is to grow and mature, especially the lungs and brain, and to add the fat that helps regulate body temperature after birth. The baby is also practicing skills like sucking and swallowing.

Space is getting tight. Movements often change from sharp kicks to rolls, stretches and pushes, but your baby should still be moving. Your provider will explain how to pay attention to movement in the final weeks. If you notice a change or feel unsure, contact your OB or midwife right away; do not wait.

How You May Be Feeling

Many moms feel heavy, tired and short of breath as the baby grows, then notice some relief if the baby drops lower toward the end. Frequent trips to the bathroom, trouble sleeping and practice contractions are also common in the final stretch.

Your prenatal visits usually become more frequent now. Your provider may check the baby's position, talk with you about signs of labor and discuss routine late-pregnancy tests. It is a good time to ask every question on your list.

Getting Ready at Home

Nesting is real. Many parents feel a strong urge to organize, clean and prepare. Focus on the things that will make the first days easier.

  • Pack your bag early; our hospital bag checklist helps you avoid forgetting the essentials.
  • Install the car seat and have it checked if you can.
  • Prepare a few simple meals to freeze for after birth.
  • Save your provider's and hospital's phone numbers in your phone.
  • Decide who will care for older children or pets when labor starts.

Can You Still Have a 3D/4D Scan Now?

Yes. Our Golden Memories and Mommy Bundle packages are available from 27 weeks on, and First Peek runs up to 40 weeks. Some families love seeing their baby one last time before birth, especially to compare with the newborn photos.

It is important to keep expectations realistic. With less room to move, the baby may be tucked low, face pressed against the placenta or the uterine wall, or with hands in front of the face. If you have a choice, the window explained in weeks 27 to 32, the best time for a 3D/4D ultrasound often gives more room for clear images.

Keepsakes to Welcome Your Baby

A late scan can be a sweet way to close the pregnancy chapter. Many parents frame a favorite image for the nursery or bring a Heartbeat Bear to the hospital. The Mommy Bundle includes a small bear with your baby's heartbeat, plus an 8K hyperrealistic image.

Looking back at your journey can be emotional too. If you want to revisit an earlier stage, weeks 23 to 26, when your baby can hear your voice is a lovely read about bonding through sound.

Emotions in the Last Weeks

It is normal to feel a mix of excitement, worry and impatience as your due date approaches. Some days you may feel ready to meet your baby right now; other days you may wish for a little more time. Many parents find it helps to talk about these feelings openly with a partner, friend or their provider.

Remember that only a small number of babies arrive exactly on the due date. Your OB or midwife will guide you on what is normal for your pregnancy and what to do if labor starts or if you have questions at any hour. Rest when you can, accept help when it is offered, and try to enjoy the last quiet moments of pregnancy.

The Right Package for Weeks 33 to 40

In the final stretch, Golden Memories ($129, 27+ weeks, 30 minutes) and the Mommy Bundle ($169, 27+ weeks) remain available, and First Peek ($59, 7 to 40 weeks) is a short, simple option for a heartbeat check and printed pictures. Our re-scan policy for Golden Memories and the Mommy Bundle applies only when the face cannot be seen due to position, is not guaranteed and is scheduled Monday to Friday.

You can see all options on our package overview. Whatever you choose, we wish you a safe, joyful birth and a beautiful first meeting with your baby.

Frequently asked questions

Is it too late for a 3D/4D ultrasound at 36 weeks?

Not necessarily, as our premium packages are available from 27 weeks on. With less room to move, images can be harder to capture, so many families prefer roughly 27 to 32 weeks when possible.

Does the re-scan policy apply if my baby is too low?

The technician decides if a complimentary re-scan is appropriate when the face cannot be seen due to position. It is not guaranteed and does not apply when images are limited by low fluid, placenta placement or hands, feet or cord in front of the face.

What should I do if my baby is moving less?

Contact your OB or midwife right away. An elective scan is not the place to check on movement or health concerns.
