Weeks 27 to 32: The Best Time for a 3D/4D Ultrasound
Why many families choose weeks 27 to 32 as the best time for a 3D/4D ultrasound, what affects your images, and which 5D HD package fits this stage best.

Our ultrasounds are elective, non-diagnostic, and performed solely for keepsake and peace of mind purposes. They are not a substitute for a medical ultrasound from your healthcare provider.
If you have been waiting to see your baby's face in detail, this is the stage many families look forward to most. For a lot of parents, the best time for a 3D/4D ultrasound falls between roughly 27 and 32 weeks.
In this article we explain why, what can affect your images, and how to prepare. It is part of our pregnancy week by week guide, which covers every stage from the first heartbeat to birth.
Why 27 to 32 Weeks Is Such a Popular Window
At the start of the third trimester, babies begin to gain more fat under the skin. That is what gives the cheeks, lips and chin their soft, round look, and it is why faces in this window often resemble what parents see after birth.
At the same time, there is usually still enough amniotic fluid and room in front of the face for clear images. Later in pregnancy, as the baby grows and space gets tighter, the face can be pressed against the placenta or the uterine wall more often, which can make images harder to capture.
- Fuller cheeks and more defined features than in the second trimester.
- Usually still some room for the baby to move and turn.
- Plenty of time for a return visit if the baby is shy the first time, when eligible under our re-scan policy.
What You and Your Baby Are Experiencing
The third trimester begins around week 28. Your baby is growing, practicing breathing movements and opening and closing the eyes. Movements are strong and frequent, and many moms notice regular active times during the day.
You may feel more tired again, with backaches, heartburn or trouble sleeping. Your provider will likely see you more often from here, and it is important to follow their guidance on monitoring your baby's movements. If anything seems different, call your OB or midwife right away.
What Shapes Your Images
Even at the best time, every baby is different, and image quality can never be guaranteed. The baby's position, the amount of fluid in front of the face, and where the placenta sits all play a role. Hands, feet and the umbilical cord like to wander in front of the face too.
We go deeper on these factors in fluid, placenta and baby's position: what shapes your images. The good news is that a patient, experienced technician and a relaxed mom make a big difference.

Golden Memories vs Mommy Bundle
Both of our premium packages start at 27 weeks and use our GE Voluson E10 with HDlive Silhouette, a technology we are the exclusive provider of in Charlotte and nearby areas.
- Golden Memories ($129, 27+ weeks, 5D/HD): 30 minutes, gender confirmation, heartbeat, six color 4x6 pictures, digital pictures and the full video, plus growth, weeks, due date and weight. You can add an 8K hyperrealistic image for $25.
- Mommy Bundle ($169, 27+ weeks, 5D/HD live): 25 to 30 minutes with everything in Golden Memories, plus unlimited digital pictures, digital video, an 8K hyperrealistic image and a small Heartbeat Bear with your baby's heartbeat.
About Our Re-Scan Policy
With Golden Memories and the Mommy Bundle, if the baby's face cannot be seen because of position, our technician decides whether a complimentary re-scan is appropriate. It is not guaranteed, and if approved, it is scheduled Monday to Friday only.
The re-scan does not apply when images are limited by low amniotic fluid, placenta placement, or a face covered by hands, feet or the umbilical cord. We share this openly so you can plan with realistic expectations.
Planning Ahead for the Final Weeks
Many families plan their visit for a quiet weekend or a weekday morning when everyone can come. Wear comfortable clothing that makes it easy to uncover your belly, and consider having a light snack beforehand, as some babies become more active after mom eats.
Booking in this window also leaves time to enjoy your images before the busy final stretch. Many parents print a favorite photo for the nursery or tuck one into the hospital bag. Our article on pregnancy keepsakes like photos, videos and heartbeat bears has ideas.
If you are already past 32 weeks, do not worry. Read weeks 33 to 40, the final stretch for what to expect from a late scan. And if you missed the earlier 5D peek, weeks 23 to 26 explains that stage.
The Right Package for Weeks 27 to 32
For this stage, Golden Memories ($129) and the Mommy Bundle ($169), both from 27 weeks, are the packages most families choose. The 5D Sneak Peek ($99, 22+ weeks) remains a shorter option if you prefer.
When you are ready, book your 3D/4D session at our Charlotte studio. There is no deposit, loved ones are welcome, and hablamos Español.
