Our ultrasounds are elective, non-diagnostic, and performed solely for keepsake and peace of mind purposes. They are not a substitute for a medical ultrasound from your healthcare provider.

Knowing what to expect makes any first experience easier. If you are planning a 3D 4D ultrasound session, you might wonder how long it takes, who can come, what you need to bring and what happens after the scan.

Here is the full visit at Video Prenatal, step by step, from the moment you book to the moment you share your baby's pictures with the family.

Step 1: choosing a package and booking

Start by choosing the package that fits your week and your wishes. Our guide on how to choose the right ultrasound package for your week makes it easy. We are open Monday through Saturday by appointment only, and same-day appointments may be possible if you call or WhatsApp to confirm.

Booking requires no deposit. If your plans change, please give us at least 24 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule. Late cancellations or missed appointments may require a deposit for future bookings. Hablamos Español.

Step 2: preparing in the weeks before

The most helpful preparation starts early. We recommend moms double their water intake in the weeks leading up to the appointment, because more fluid in front of the baby's face improves image quality. Read more in why drinking water before your ultrasound makes a difference.

If you have any health condition, check with your OB or midwife first. On the day, choose comfortable two-piece clothing and decide who you would like to invite.

It also helps to think ahead about what you most want from the visit. Is there a special moment you hope to capture, like a yawn or a hand near the face? Would you like to confirm the gender again, or keep it a surprise for someone in the room? Tell us at check-in and we will keep it in mind during the scan.

Step 3: arriving at the studio

Our studio is at 5500 Executive Center Dr #221, Charlotte, NC 28212. When you arrive, we welcome you, confirm your package and answer any last questions. Family and friends are welcome, and our room has seating for up to 8 guests, so partners, siblings and grandparents can all share the moment.

If you are bringing older children, our article on getting siblings and grandparents ready for the new baby has ideas to help them feel part of it.

Step 4: the scan itself

You relax on a comfortable bed, we apply warm gel to your belly and the images appear on a large screen. Depending on your package, we check the heartbeat and share your baby's growth, weeks, due date and weight, then move to 3D, 4D and HD views.

If your baby is shy, we may ask you to change position or take a short walk. The factors that shape the images, like fluid, placenta and position, are explained in fluid, placenta and baby's position: what shapes your images.

  • Heartbeat: heard or seen, depending on the package.
  • Growth: baby growth, weeks, due date and estimated weight.
  • 3D and 4D: still images and live movement of your baby.
  • 5D/HD: lifelike views with realistic light, in the longer sessions.

Step 5: pictures, video and the Bomee app

At the end of the session, you receive your printed pictures, and, depending on the package, digital pictures and video. Your images and videos are easy to access through the Bomee app, so you can share them with family near and far.

In the Mommy Bundle, you also take home an 8K hyperrealistic image and a Heartbeat Bear with your baby's heartbeat, two keepsakes families love.

Many parents like to review their video together at home that evening, and it is often the moment they notice new details: a dimple, a pout, the way the baby stretched. Sharing the link with relatives who live far away lets them feel part of the day too.

Step 6: after your visit

An elective ultrasound is a keepsake and peace of mind experience. It does not replace your medical care, so keep all the appointments your OB or midwife recommends and bring any health questions to them.

If you have questions about your pictures or want to plan another visit later in pregnancy, just call or WhatsApp us. Some families come back for a second session as the due date approaches, while others treasure a single visit as their special memory.
