Will every 3D ultrasound show a perfect face? We clear up common myths about seeing your baby's face and explain what fluid, placenta and position change.

Our ultrasounds are elective, non-diagnostic, and performed solely for keepsake and peace of mind purposes. They are not a substitute for a medical ultrasound from your healthcare provider.
For many parents, the highlight of pregnancy is seeing their baby's face for the first time. A baby face ultrasound in 3D, 5D or HD can be magical, and it is no surprise that so many myths have grown up around it.
In this article we clear up the most common ones with the same honesty we share in our studio: what shapes your images, what you can do ahead of time, and what our re-scan policy really covers.
Myth: Every 3D Ultrasound Shows a Perfect Face
Beautiful sample images online can make it seem like every session ends with a flawless portrait. The truth is that every baby is different, and image quality cannot be guaranteed. Even with our GE Voluson E10 and HDlive Silhouette, what you see depends on your baby and on the conditions inside the womb that day.
Some babies turn toward the camera and smile. Others keep their back to us or tuck their face against the placenta. Both are completely normal. The equipment can show beautiful detail, but it cannot choose your baby's pose.
It also helps to remember that sample images are chosen because they are special. Your own pictures will be of your own baby, with all the personality that comes with it, and that is what makes them priceless to your family.
What Really Shapes Your Baby's Face on Screen
Three things matter most: your baby's position, the amount of amniotic fluid in front of the face, and where the placenta sits. Little hands, feet and the umbilical cord also love to get in the way. We explain each one in detail in fluid, placenta and baby's position: what shapes your images.
- Position: a baby facing your back or pressed down is harder to see.
- Amniotic fluid: more fluid in front of the face helps create a clearer image.
- Placenta placement: when it sits in front, it can limit the view.
- Hands, feet and cord: sweet to see, but they can cover the face.

Myth: Nothing You Do Beforehand Makes a Difference
There is one thing we always recommend. We recommend moms double their water intake in the weeks leading up to the appointment. More fluid in front of the baby's face improves image quality. If you have any reason to be careful with fluids, ask your provider first.
You may also hear that sweet or cold drinks right before the scan will make your baby turn around. Many parents try it, but no drink can guarantee a position. Food and drink questions during pregnancy are always best answered by your OB or midwife, as we explain in eating for two: myth or fact.
Myth: If the Face Is Hidden, You Can Always Come Back Free
Our re-scan policy is available with Golden Memories and Mommy Bundle. If your baby's face cannot be seen due to position, the technician determines whether a complimentary re-scan is appropriate. It is not guaranteed, and if approved, it is scheduled Monday to Friday only.
The re-scan does not apply when image limits are due to low amniotic fluid, placenta placement, or the face being covered by hands, feet or the umbilical cord. We share this openly so your expectations are clear before you book.
In other words, the re-scan is a thoughtful option for one specific situation, a baby whose position hides the face, and the decision rests with the technician who performed your session. Knowing this ahead of time helps you choose the package that fits your hopes.
Myth: A Blurry Image Means Something Is Wrong
A hidden or blurry face on an elective session usually just reflects position, fluid or placenta. Still, our sessions are non-diagnostic and never a substitute for medical care. If you have any question about your baby's health, please ask your OB or midwife, who can look at the full picture. Our guide to elective vs medical ultrasound explains the difference, and our pillar on pregnancy myths and facts covers more beliefs you may hear.

Frequently asked questions
Will I definitely see my baby's face?
Not always. Every baby is different, and position, amniotic fluid and placenta placement all affect the view, so image quality cannot be guaranteed.
Does drinking water really help?
We recommend moms double their water intake in the weeks leading up to the appointment, since more fluid in front of the face improves image quality. Ask your provider if you need to be careful with fluids.
Can I get a free re-scan if the face is hidden?
With Golden Memories and Mommy Bundle, the technician decides whether a complimentary re-scan is appropriate when position hides the face. It is not guaranteed and does not apply to low fluid, placenta placement or a covered face.
